A survivor of the London Bridge terror attack today told how he came face-to-face with an “angry” extremist who slashed him with a knife.

Andrew Morrison was confronted by one of the three Islamic State-inspired attackers after becoming separated from his friends at London Bridge station on the evening of June 3, 2017.

He said the burly terrorist was dressed in combat gear and brandishing a chef’s kitchen knife, and appeared to be wearing a “grey bulletproof vest”.

“He was two or three metres from me”, Mr Morrison said in a statement read to the Old Bailey this morning.

“He was of dark Middle Eastern appearance, he appeared about 6ft and had a buzz cut. He was wearing what looked like a grey bulletproof vest.

“He had an angry look on his face... he was holding the knife by the handle, and the knife appeared to be glowing pink. He swung the knife between my chin and left cheek. I felt blood.”

Mr Morrison said he had sought refuge in a pub after the confrontation, and alerted the police who sent an armed team to where he had been attacked.

He said of the people in the pub: “One told me I was going to be okay, another person offered me a beer.”

The inquest, which is now into its third week, is hearing evidence on the deaths of eight people during the 10-minute attack by Rachid Redouane, 30, Youssef Zaghba, 22, and Khuram Butt, 27.

The extremists drove a white van at pedestrians on London Bridge before going on a knife rampage through the streets around Borough Market.

Christine Archibald, 30, James McMullan, 32, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sebastien Belanger, 36, Kirsty Boden, 28, Sara Zelenak, 21, Xavier Thomas, 45, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39, all died in the attack.

The three terrorists were shot dead by police. The inquest concerning their victims continues.
