Theresa May has returned to Downing Street for emergency briefings after tonight's terror attack at London Bridge.

The Prime Minister will chair an emergency meeting of Cobra on Sunday following tonight’s horrific events which are thought to have left at least one person dead.

Police declared the incidents at two locations - London Bridge and Borough Market - were terrorist related. The incident in Vauxhall was a stabbing but not connected to terrorism.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister is tonight returning to Number 10 for further briefings from security officials. She called the events "a potential act of terrorism".

A major incident was declared at shortly after 10pm on Saturday amid reports of separate alerts at London Bridge and Borough Market.

A white van reportedly ploughed into pedestrians on London Bridge, mowing five or six people down.

Witnesses enjoying nights out in pubs and bars were then told to barricade themselves indoors as reports flooded in of multiple stabbings in Borough Market. Gunfire was also heard.

Police said multiple knife attacks were carried out inside the Southwark Tavern and on Southwark Street.

A witness who was in Southwark Street told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I heard this young man try to get the attention of an ambulance saying my friend has been stabbed inside the pub [the Southwark Tavern].

"We saw one other guy who looked like he had been stabbed. He was trying to get the attention of the ambulance. He was knocking on the window."

London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan also said he was in contact with the Met Police commissioner and will be attending the Government Cobra meeting on Sunday.

In a statement Mr Khan called it a "barbaric act" with no justification.

He said: "My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I'd like to thank the brave men and women of our emergency services who were first on the scene and will be working throughout the night."

The US President Donald Trump has also been briefed on Saturday night’s incidents, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

The President later tweeted: “Whatever the United States can do to help out in London and the U. K., we will be there - WE ARE WITH YOU. GOD BLESS!”

Jeremy Corbyn, Labour leader, called tonight’s incidents “brutal” and “shocking” and said his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
