Commuters faced huge crowds at Brixton station during this morning's rush hour in "apocalyptic" scenes caused by a London-wide bus strike.

Hundreds of people could be seen queuing outside the station in south London as they waited to board trains.

Transport users have complained that the station has been overcrowded in recent months due to ongoing refurbishment work, which is expected to last until this summer.

Transport for London has previously apologised for the disruption caused by escalator repair work at the station, which it says is essential as they are more than 40 years old.

But as many of the capital's bus drivers staged a planned walkout over pay today, there was reportedly increased congestion in the area.

Tube users took to Twitter to complain about the delays to their journeys.

Daniella Graham wrote: "Brixton tube station = basically the apocalypse".

Mark Jenkins said: "Run and jump on to any bus. Brixton tube station is like the end of the world."

Another Twitter user posted: "Anyone with a vaguely short temper should look for alternatives to #Brixton #tube station for the foreseeable future. Deeply upsetting."

TfL advised commuters to allow extra time for their journeys as bus services would be "patchy".
