Londoners have ground down the Covid-19 epidemic so 14 boroughs have a seven-day rate below 70 but the fall in cases is slowing, official figures reveal today.

Confirmed cases are still dropping in nearly all regions of England, however, the data suggests the battle against the virus may be starting to run out of steam in some areas.

Islington saw the biggest fall in cases in the capital of 42.2 per cent in the week to February 20, down to a seven-day rate of 39.6 new infections per 100,000 people.

Lewisham was down 38.7 per cent to a rate of 51.3, and Bromley 36.7 per cent to 54.5.

The other borough areas below 70 are Kensington and Chelsea, Wandsworth, Haringey, Enfield, Westminster, Greenwich, Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Richmond, Hackney and City of London, and Camden.

London’s seven-day rate fell to 83.3 new infections per 100,000 in the week to February 20, down 24.9 per cent on the previous week, which compares to drops of more than 42 per cent earlier this month.

As the decline of the disease slows, public health chiefs are urging Londoners to stick to the social distancing and other rules to drive down cases further.

Jason Strelitz, public health director in Newham, tweeted: “Another really positive week for the epidemic in Newham - case rate now below 100 per 100,000 for first time since early October & nearly 50,000 people vaccinated.

“Need to do all we can though to keep pushing the case rate down as low as possible.”

The seven-day rate fell fastest in the South West, 25.4 per cent compared to the previous week to 70.2, followed by the capital, and then the South East, down 19.4 per cent to 80.7, and the Eastern region down 19.2 per cent to 96.5.

Amid signs of a growing North-South divide in the epidemic, the rate nudged up 1.1 per cent in Yorkshire and the Humber to 154.3, fell by 7.5 per cent in the East Midlands to 171.2, by 12.8 per cent in the North East to 144.8, by 12.9 in the North West to 154.3, and by 13.1 per cent in the West Midlands to 157.8.
