A hotel which sparked a religious row after its new Muslim owner introduced a no alcohol policy has insisted "anyone" is welcome to stay there.

The Bermondsey Square hotel in Southwark was accused of forcing guests to live by Muslim rules after banning bacon and booze from its menus.

But its management company said today it would continue to "welcome guests of all shapes, sizes and denomination" after it was bought by a Middle Eastern businessman.

When asked whether gay couples would be allowed to book a room, a spokesperson for Bespoke Hotels told the Standard the hotel would "abide by the laws of the country" and "all guests are welcome".

In a further statement, the company said changes had been been made to "some elements of the hotel", saying that they were in "the best interests of the future of the hotel."

It added: "We always have, and continue to, welcome guests of all shapes, sizes and denomination."

Despite the hotel's defence, staff claim the new policy has prompted many potential guests to cancel their reservations, according to reports.

Recent guests have complained on Tripadvisor that the hotel, which costs £220 per night, is "not what it used to be".

But one customer posted a 4/5 star rating and suggested guests visit a nearby Sainsbury's if they were in need of alcohol.

TripAdvisor users voted the hotel as the trendiest in the UK in 2010. It was the setting for Channel 4's Hotel GB in 2012, starring chef Gordon Ramsay.

Masterchef judge Greg Wallace previously ran the hotel's bar and grill before it closed following bad reviews last year.

The hotel's owner has been contacted for comment.
