London transformed into a sea of green as thousands celebrate St Patrick's Day

Trafalgar Square and other parts of central London were transformed into a sea of green as Londoners celebrated the annual St Patrick's Day parade.

Crowds dressed up as a parade of floats, marching bands and Irish dancers made their way down Piccadilly past some of the city's landmarks before making its way to Whitehall.

The festival itself took place in Trafalgar Square from midday until 6pm with entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Live music included Nathan Carter, singer of Irish and country music band The Wagon Wheels, Irish comic Jarlath Regan and the house band from RTÉ’s Late Late Show.

Official celebrations for St Patrick's Day have taken place in London since 2001.

Deputy Mayor of London Roger Evans said: “It is very important for us to celebrate the contribution made by the Irish community in London who have given so much to our culture and to our economy."
