Londoners baked in 30C heat again today but it won’t last long with heavy rain already battering the north set to reach the capital by the weekend.

Temperatures peaked at 31.4C in London Heathrow, not quite as high as the 32.9C recorded yesterday.

Intense storms, including hail and strong winds have brought an end to the scorching heat across northern parts of the UK, while the south continues to enjoy the glorious sunshine.

The Met Office said temperatures will drop to a more comfortable 26C degrees towards the weekend with some isolated thundery showers likely on Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkhill said: "The highest we have seen is 31.4C at Heathrow, which was not quite as warm as Tuesday but not that far off, it was still quite a warm day.

"Most of the thunder moved through the north of the UK but there is still the potential for more showers to kick off.

"Thursday is not looking bad, there could be some showers dotted here and there and then some more thundery, showery rain going into Friday.

"The weekend will not be terrible, although not as hot as it has been - there will be bright and sunny breaks when it will be quite warm."

Several youths and police officers were injured in the disorder.
