London weather forecast: Warnings in place with 50mph winds set to batter capital

London is set to be battered by strong winds after forecasters issued a weather warning for the capital.

A yellow warning of wind has been issued by the Met Office, alerting Londoners that severe weather could hit the capital on Wednesday.

Winds could reach up to 50mph in the capital with wet and blustery conditions expected across England and Wales.

Motorists are warned that journey times could be longer while bus and train services may also be affected.

Met forecaster Steven Keates told the Standard: “Tomorrow is looking like a windy day for London. We have put a yellow warning out for the whole of England and Wales.

“There will be gusts of south to south-westerly winds through until the early hours of Thursday morning, wind speeds of 50mph.

“The wind may not be strong at 9am tomorrow morning but in the afternoon and overnight it will get stronger.

“Wind aside it won’t be bad day though. It will be bright and very, very mild, 15 or 16C.

“The average this time of year is 10C so a good 5C above average.”

Rain is expected to arrive on Wednesday night and although it will be brighter on Thursday, the wind and rain could return by the weekend.

Mr Keates added: “Overnight tomorrow a band of heavy rain coupled with the wind could rattle people’s windows, but by Thursday it’s looking like a brighter day with sunshine around, it will be clear with fresher air from the west.

“By Friday there will be a lot of uncertainty about, with the potential for some rain and into Saturday there could be a wet spell again to start the weekend and there could be some strong winds again.

“It will be colder, the air will have a different feel into the weekend.”
