Glorious Easter weather which saw temperatures soar above 20C is set to continue for most of the week.

London and the South East is set to see the mercury rise some nine degrees above what is normally forecast for April, with summery conditions showing no signs of abating before Friday.

Sally Webb, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: "High pressure is dominating the weather at the moment and will do for the majority of the week, until Friday when it will start to move away.

"Friday will be the warmest day, particularly in the South East, but there may be some drizzle in parts of the North West and it will feel substantially cooler in Scotland and the North going into Saturday and Sunday, as temperatures could fall into the single digits."

She added the UK was unlikely to experience any ill effects from the phenomenon known as the Spanish Plume, which can bring with it large thunderstorms.

Temperatures in London over the Easter weekend hit a balmy 16C, with people flocking to the capital's parks and green spaces to make the most of the sunshine.

Conditions exceeded expectations for a damp and dull Bank Holiday after forecasters warned of April showers.

The average UK temperature for April is 11.4C (52F) and for England is 12.4C, according to the Met Office.
