Forecasters today issued weather warnings as London was lashed with torrential rain.

The Met Office cautioned Londoners to expect heavy and “possibly thundery” downpours and said there may be localised flooding.

The forecast prompted it to issue a yellow weather warning for rain for the capital and other parts of the South East.

A spokesman said some areas could be drenched with up to 30mm in two hours.

“There are already some areas of rain and showers across southern areas, but as temperatures increase this morning, these are likely to become heavy in places, with localised downpours possible,” he said.

“Furthermore, as on recent days, the showers may well organise themselves into slow-moving bands of heavy rain, which may produce 20 to 30 mm of rain over two or three hours.”

Temperatures in London hit the highest levels this year earlier this week, but forecasters say the weekend will be cooler, with highs of 8C on Saturday and 12C on Sunday.
