Commuters have shared their stunning pictures of a double rainbow that appeared in the skies over London after a spell of rain.

The rare spectacle could be seen all over the capital as Londoners on their way home from work stopped to take pictures as it arched over the Thames.

Twitter users told how the striking rainbow brightened their day despite being “sodden” by showers that hit London on Monday afternoon.

Londoners took to social media to share their view as the colourful arch appeared over landmarks such as the Shard and Tower Bridge.

It came after rainy weather eased away and winds calmed to make way for a clearer evening in the capital.

Forecaster Greg Dewhurst described an "unsettled autumn day" that was expected across the country throughout Monday.

He predicted a second area of low pressure coming in from the Atlantic is expected to bring more strong winds on Tuesday night, lasting into Wednesday morning.

Met forecaster Charles Powell told the Standard: “It’s Tuesday night when we are looking at the next bit of wet and windier weather so there is a weather warning out as well.

“For the rest of the week it’s just a blustery old picture with further showers.”
