A man has died after falling from a bridge onto a busy A road in east London during the evening rush hour.

The victim fell on to Aspen Way, the A1261, near Poplar DLR station at about 6.30pm today.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene in Tower Hamlets but the man was pronounced dead minutes later, Scotland Yard said.

Detectives have launched an investigation but said they were treating his death as "non-supicious".

Police closed a section of the road for more than an hour but it has since reopened.

The incident caused delays for motorists in the area this evening.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Police were called to Aspen Way at 6.30pm on September 17 to reports of a man fallen from a bridge.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue.

"At this early stage the death appears to be non-suspicious."
