Man 'in his 80s' taken to hospital after being hit by Mercedes in Islington

A man in his 80s was rushed to hospital after being hit by a luxury car in a busy north London street today.

Witnesses said a Mercedes CLK swerved to avoid the pedestrian but he was hit while crossing Essex Road in Islington.

Singer Harry Harris tweeted: "Islington Green / Essex Road basically blocked off, nasty looking accident, soft top car with a smashed windscreen."

A spokeswoman for the Met said: "Police were called at 12.21pm to reports of a male pedestrian, believed to be in his 80s, in collision with a car at the junction of Essex Road and St Peter's Street.

"The London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance attended.

"Road closures are in place and significant traffic delays are expected."

No further information about the man's condition was immediately available.

The London Ambulance Service was not immediately available for comment.
