A man is fighting for his life in hospital after falling from an escalator inside a busy department store in central London.

Police, paramedics and London's Air Ambulance were called to Peter Jones, in Sloane Square, Chelsea, shortly after 1pm this afternoon.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital in an ambulance suffering from multiple injuries.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police described his injuries as “life-threatening”.

He said: “We were called today at 1.05pm to reports of a man fallen from an escalator inside a department store in Sloane Square in Kensington and Chelsea.

“Officers, LAS and London's Air Ambulance attended.

“The man, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital by the LAS suffering from multiple injuries.

“His condition is described as life-threatening at this stage. We have still got officers at the scene and inquiries are on-going.”

The seven-floor shop, owned by the John Lewis Partnership, was crowded with shoppers taking advantage of the Christmas sales at the time.

It is believed to have closed early following the incident.
