Witnesses today spoke of their horror after a man was killed by a double-decker bus in Tooting.
The victim was dragged underneath the number 131’s front left wheel outside Tooting Broadway Tube station at about 6.20pm yesterday.
It hit him on a pedestrian crossing as it turned from Mitcham Road into Tooting High Street and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Tube worker, who wished not to be named, said: "Someone came running into the station saying someone needed an ambulance because they had just been run over by a bus on the crossing.
"I rushed out and you could see he was dead immediately."
"He had just been crossing the road and the bus came round the corner and hit him. It really was a dreadful scene and very bad."
The man, thought to be in his 50s, was hit as he crossed at lights on Tooting High Street. His next of kin have not been informed. The driver was not arrested.
Another witness, from nearby Lebara Mobile, said: "Before the police got here there were tons of people crowding round and you could see the person under the bus.
"We are all just still shaking. It was a very sad scene and some people were crying."
A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We sent a number of ambulance crews to the scene and London’s air ambulance by car.
"Sadly, despite the best efforts of our medics, the patient was pronounced dead at the scene by the air ambulance doctor."
