Man suffers head injuries after being attacked in Croydon town centre

Scene: the man was attacked near the Centrale Shopping Centre in Croydon

A man was attacked in a busy town centre in south London this afternoon.

The victim, believed to be in his 70s, suffered head injuries in Tamworth Road in Croydon and was taken to hospital shortly after 2.15pm.

His alleged attacker, who police said was in his 60s, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm at the scene near the Centrale Shopping centre.

Witnesses saw him run in to the street from the Tamworth Resource Centre, which provides support for adults with severe mental health needs, according to reports from the Croydon Advertiser.

He was seen being restrained by NHS staff after the attack until police arrived.

The South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Trust, which is responsible for the resource centre, confirmed police were investigating.

Transport for London (TflL) said trams had been suspended between Reeves Corner and East Croydon due to the incident.

A London Ambulance spokesman said the man was conscious when paramedics arrived at the scene and was taken to hospital "as a priority".
