A man has been taken to hospital after a building collapse in east London.

Police said the man, believed to be a construction worker, was treated for abdominal injuries after the incident in Dalston at about 1.15pm on Friday.

The accident is thought to have happened during work on a basement conversion at a semi-detached house in Malvern Road.

Neighbour Mike Hood, 59, told the Standard: "There has been a basement excavation going on there for several weeks.

"They took somebody out of the house on a stretcher, put him in an ambulance and whisked him away, so there's obviously been a serious incident in the property. The police have been taking statements from all the workers involved."

The retired construction worker added: "Whatever it was was in the basement where they were doing the work.

"It's obviously a serious incident. Unfortunately someone's Christmas has been ruined by whatever the incident was in the house."

A spokeswoman for Scotland Yard said: "We were called to a property at 1.15pm to reports of a building collapse.

"An adult male was taken to hospital with abdominal injuries by the London Ambulance Service."

The London Ambulance Service could not immediately clarify details of the man's injuries.
