Manet portraits heading for Royal Academy

The first major UK exhibition of portraits by Edouard Manet will go on display at the Royal Academy of Arts, it was announced today.

The exhibition will examine the relationship between the pioneering French artist’s portrait painting and his scenes of modern life.

Manet: Portraying Life will include more than 50 paintings spanning his career together with a selection of pastels and contemporary photographs.

Highlights will include The Luncheon, 1868, depicting Léon, the son of Manet’s wife, The Railway, 1873, right, and Music In The Tuileries Gardens, 1862, above.

The exhibition runs from January 26-April 14, with full-price tickets costing £14.
