The body of a young man has been pulled from a deep-water east London dock.

Emergency services including police helicopters, divers, firefighters and paramedics scrambled to Shadwell Basin in Wapping just before 1pm after reports a distressed man had jumped in the water.

The 29-year-old, believed to be a foreign national, was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was recovered from the dock.

Police said the death was not suspicious.

Nearby residents told the Standard they watched the rescue operation as emergency teams descended on the docks.

Sound engineer Dominic King, 36, said he left his home nearby to investigate after he heard a police helicopter circling overhead.

He said: "I saw the body being carried out of the water and you could tell there was nothing they could do. He was lifeless.

"It's just such a tragic waste of life.”
