Police in London have been inundated with messages of goodwill following the murder of PC Keith Palmer in the Westminster terror attack.

PC Palmer died protecting the public from knifeman Khalid Masood who, moments earlier, had mowed down dozens of people on Westminster Bridge.

Two people - American Kurt Cochran and Spaniard Aysha Frade - were killed and about 40 others hurt on the bridge.

Since the killings, well-wishers have pledged more than £230,000 to an online fundraiser for PC Palmer’s family.

Members of the Metropolitan Police have been sharing some of the touching tributes they have received from Londoners since PC Palmer’s death.

One defiant card handed in to the Met’s road policing unit read: “Just to say a BIG thank you to our amazing Met Police force.

“Thanks to you, I didn’t think twice about coming into London today.

"You make us feel safe and we really appreciated the sacrifices made on our behalf.

“RIP PC Keith Palmer. Take care.”

Another given to officers in Kingston said: “Thank you for your service to the community and for being fearless and brave when you are protecting the community.”

“Thank you for keeping us safe and being extraordinary,” it said.

Newham police shared a number of tributes, sent with flowers, from children at Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls' School in Forest Gate.

The Met have announced that, as a remark of respect to PC Palmer, his shoulder number 4157U would be retired.

A book of condolence has also been opened on the Met website where people can leave their words of support.

On Thursday, police named the terrorist killer as 52-year-old Mr Masood and said they had arrested three women and five men on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts.

Isis has claimed responsibility for the attack.
