A new smartphone app will let Londoners identify local crime suspects at the click of a button.

Scotland Yard will today upload about 8,000 images of suspects onto the app, which allows users to identify suspects by postcode.

The total includes almost 3,000 images of people wanted for offences committed during the disorder in London last year.

Phone users will be able to inform on people by clicking on a face and sending a name and address straight to officers.

The drive is being launched today as part of a wider crackdown on crime in advance of the Olympics.

The free ID app was developed with security software firm Facewatch. Assistant commissioner Mark Rowley, head of specialist crime and operations at Scotland Yard, said: “This is a great opportunity for the public to help us fight crime. My hope is that Londoners will download this app and help us identify people.

“We need Londoners to browse through the app every week or so as new images will appear regularly. ”

The app, partly sponsored by BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion, is available at the Apple App Store, Android Google Play and Blackberry App World.
