A Millwall fan has died after collapsing in the stands during last month’s 3-0 victory against Northampton Town.

Tributes have poured in for "true Lion" Antony Murphy, who suffered a cardiac arrest during the match at the Den on Good Friday.

Shocked Lions fans attempted to run on the pitch to get the referee to stop play, and game was ended without playing four minutes of stoppage time.

A Just Giving page set up by Mr Murphy's friends to help the 40-year-old during his recovery said he wasn’t breathing for nine minutes and was resuscitated.

The club released a statement confirming that he died on Friday morning.

The news comes ahead of of Millwall's League One play off final against Bradford on Saturday.

Many fans have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Mr Murphy.

One said: “Just heard the news about Antony Murphy our fan who collapsed on good Friday, rest in peace mate hopefully we will win for you tomorrow.”

Another said: “Horrible news about Antony Murphy. RIP fella, no doubt battled right to the end like a true Lion! Do it for him tomorrow.”

Another added: “Antony Murphy #RIP no need for a team talk, just do it for him and he's family.”

The club said in a statement: “Millwall Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lions fan Antony Murphy.

“Antony fought like a true Lion from the moment he collapsed during the game against Northampton Town right up until his tragic passing on Friday morning.
