Two further patients were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The drivers of the lorry and coach stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made, police said.

Witnesses described "chaos" as up to nine police cars rushed up the hard shoulder towards the crash.

One told the Standard: "I got there about two hours after it had happened and the whole road was closed.

"Police were driving up the other side to us and along the hard shoulder.

"You could tell it was nasty, police were waving us past and you could see a forensic tent.

"There was a coach inside the police cordon and people were being escorted off."

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based at Catford continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact the witness appeal line on 020 8285 1574.
