More than 1,000 people were injured by potholes in London last year, research revealed today.

Almost one in three cases — 315 — were in Kingston, followed by 256 in Wandsworth and 202 in Hounslow.

The 1,078 cases admitted by 25 of the capital’s 33 councils in freedom of information responses to an ITV News survey resulted in compensation payouts of £410,038. Newham council paid out the most compensation (£188,864), followed by Barnet (£88,492) and Wandworth (£22,452).

More than £6.3 million was spent repairing almost 73,000 potholes potholes. Ealing and Wandsworth spent the most on repairs — £996,175 and £721,375 respectively.

The figures come after cyclist Alan Curtis won almost £70,000 compensation from Hertfordshire County Council after suffering brain injuries when he struck a pothole in Rickmansworth.
