A motorcyclist has died following a rush-hour crash in south London.

Emergency services were called at about 6.45pm to the collision on the A217 Belmont Rise, at the junction with Northdown Road, in Sutton, after the crash was reported. Tragically the biker, a man whose age is not yet known, was pronounced dead.

His motorcycle had collided with a van, police said.

The stretch of road is north of a notorious site for street racing dubbed the "mad mile". The A217 remains shut following the crash, which reportedly caused a fire. Police and firefighters are still on the scene.
