UK weather forecast: Dry and mild for New Year's Eve as revellers prepare to welcome start of new decade

Tim Baker28 December 2019

Revellers preparing to celebrate New Year's Eve are set for a dry and mild night for the final fireworks display of the decade.

People travelling to the capital to see the London Eye lit up will face a day of patchy showers, but by the time the clock strikes midnight the rain should have passed.

A forecaster for the Met Office said that temperatures will be in the high single figures for the final few hours of 2019 and start of 2020.

This weekend could see temperatures reaching 15C in parts of the country, but the mercury will drop as the week goes on.

It continues the trend of mild Christmases and New Year's Eves, with 20 per cent of the December days in the 2010s being over 14C.

Craig Snell, a forecaster with the Met Office said: “We may see a little bit of rain, but over the next five days or so it should be clear in England and Wales.

“In London on New Year’s Day the temperature will be around 10C in the day and then in the high singles as it gets dark.

“There will be some clouds in London, but skies should be clear up north for Hogmanay.”

And the sodden parts of the south that saw flooding over the past few weeks will get a respite from downpours.

It comes as 30 flood warnings and 67 flood alerts remain in place across south west England on Saturday.

Mr Snell added that over the next week the Met Office is not expecting to be issuing any more weather warnings.
