One in four Londoners have admitted to knowingly drink-driving over the Christmas period.

New research conducted at the beginning of December found the capital had the country’s most relaxed attitude towards getting behind the wheel after a few drinks over the Christmas period.

In fact, London’s 25 per cent was more than double the national average of 11 per cent who admitted drink-driving, the study said.

A further 20 per cent admitted they may well have been over the limit the morning after a night of drinking but still drove.

Bristol was the UK’s most cautious city with just three per cent of respondents admitting to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The research was carried out by Coca Cola as part of its annual Designated Driver scheme, which gives the driver for the night two-for-one soft drinks at participating pubs and bars across the country.

Aedamar Howlett, Marketing Director of Coca-Cola Great Britain and Ireland, said: “Designated drivers are the unsung heroes of the Christmas party season and this is our way of saying thank you to everyone who is taking on the role this Christmas and making sure that friends and family have a great night out and get home safely.”

The survey also found drink-driving was rated the ‘least socially acceptable activity’ this Christmas, beating driving while on the phone and smoking in front of children to the top spot.

Partnered with the Department for Transport's Think! campaign, the Designated Driver promotion runs from December 1 to 31.

The penalty for drink-driving is a fine, a lifetime driving ban or a jail sentence.

The survey asked 2,000 people about their habits.
