Parking permit or council tax? Pop into the nearest post office

A council has launched a partnership with the Post Office that will allow residents to access council services from any of its branches.

Hammersmith & Fulham hopes the pioneering project will turn around the fortunes of post offices in London.

Council leader Nicholas Botterill said: “Instead of having to traipse all the way to Hammersmith town hall, we want residents to be able to pop around the corner to buy a book of stamps and access council services.”

Under the agreement residents will soon be able to access a range of council services from any UK post office including payments for council tax, business rates, housing rents and service charges.

The arrangement may be extended in the future to include other services such as parking permits.

The Tory council has signed a “pan-London framework agreement” with Post Office bosses, meaning that other town halls in the capital can join them in the partnership.

The council said the project will save taxpayers around £90,000 a year. A spokesman added that there will be no job losses as a direct result of the scheme.
