Fashion giant Paul Smith and the team behind the Olympic torch will get their own exhibitions at the Design Museum next year.

Announcing the 2013 programme today, director Deyan Sudjic said that after this summer’s show dedicated to shoemaker Christian Louboutin — its busiest ever — he expected large crowds for the celebration of Smith’s long career.

Show curator Donna Loveday said the Smith show would include classics from his four decades of collections and reveal something of the personality of the designer known for “Englishness combined with an unexpected twist”.

The exhibition will run from November next year to March 2014.

Torch designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby will curate a show explaining their fascination with the production of everyday objects.

Barber said: “Ignorance of how things are made has become very pervasive in society. This is an opportunity for us to unveil some secrets of production.”

The exhibition, including a display of the torch part way through development, will run from May 8 to August 25 next year.

The museum remains at Shad Thames during work to turn the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington into its new home. Almost £40 million has been raised towards the move.
