A 38-year-old man is fighting for his life with serious head injuries after being hit by a double-decker bus in north London this morning.

Transport chiefs were today investigating the crash, which happened in Finchley High Road at about 7.30am. Detectives said the victim was trying to cross the road and had stepped off the footpath when he was hit by the out-of-service 134 bus.

London Ambulance Service took him to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. The driver stopped at the scene and has not been arrested.

TfL's bus chief Mike Weston said: “At 7.29am, an out-of-service, route 134 double decker bus, operated by Metroline, was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in Finchley High Road, N12, on a flyover section of the North Circular Road.

"There will be a full investigation into the incident.”

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 7.25am to High Road, Finchley, to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew and London's Air Ambulance trauma team by car.

"We treated a patient for head injuries. [He was] taken to the Royal London Hospital, escorted by the doctor from London's Air Ambulance.”

Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call Det Sgt Cheryl Frost of the Serious Collision Investigating Unit on 020 8991 9555.
