An air ambulance was dispatched to the junction with Albermarle Street as police closed the A4 Piccadilly eastbound, causing major delays to buses and motorists.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called at 7.55am to Albermarle Street. A female cyclist in her late 20s was in collision with a lorry.

“She has gone to hospital with serious leg injuries. We wait an update on her condition.”

The lorry driver stopped at the scene, police said.

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: “We treated a woman at the scene and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority by road."

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area as the Piccadilly Underpass eastbound was closed after the crash.

There is also no access to Piccadilly from Hyde Park Corner.

A TfL spokesman said: “A4 Piccadilly is fully blocked eastbound opposite St James’s Street due to a collision. No traffic is getting past. Use other routes if you can.”

Scotland Yard later confirmed the cyclist remains in a non-life threatening condition but suffered potentially life-changing injuries.
