Cycle lanes and a pedestrian crossing are among proposals to improve the safety of the busy roads surrounding St Pancras station.

Camden Council has launched a public consultation into plans to extend a protected cycle route from Pancras Road south into Midland Road and Euston Road.

A new pedestrian crossing and segregated cycle track would also be built in Euston Road - made possible by banning motorists from entering and exiting the road via Judd Street.

Alternatively, traffic would be able to enter Judd Street but only if travelling from Midland Road, with a separate contraflow track for cyclists.

In Midland Road, the authority plans to create segregated cycle lanes, remove the existing traffic island outside St Pancras station and build a large raised area to ease pedestrian movement.

The council’s plans, drawn up in partnership with Transport for London are part of the ‘Central London Cycle Grid’ – a network of routes designed to make biking around the city safer.

Transport for London (TfL) said the proposals could increase journey times for motorists, with some having to find alternative routes due to new traffic restrictions.

The consultation report said: “TfL has designed its proposals to minimise the impact on Euston Road traffic whilst still providing time and space for cyclists and pedestrians.

“However, both options could mean some slight increases journey times and queuing for general traffic at busy times, particularly travelling eastbound on Euston Road and exiting Midland Road heading west.”

The public consultation will run until March 20.
