Police ‘let OAP wander to his death’

11 November 2013

The family of an Alzheimer’s sufferer who died in snow after police let him “wander off alone” today branded officers “stupid”.

William Lee’s body was found in Mays Lane, Barnet, on March 25, four days after he went missing from his home in Hackney.

His daughter Isabelle said police spoke to him the night before he died, but accepted his explanation that he was walking home from the pub without checking his name: “It was stupid to let a muddled 77-year-old walk off.”

An inquest will be held next month. The Met said it was not possible to state categorically that the man stopped was Mr Lee.
