Emergency services were negotiating today with a man threatening to jump from a 100ft crane towering over Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium site.

The man had ascended the crane at around 6.30pm on Monday and police alerted who sent officers, along with paramedics and firefighters, up the crane to talk to the man.

There were six emergency services officers in the crane cabin, over 100 foot high, throughout the evening and night.

He was still up there as of 7am today.

A section of High Road alongside the football club’s home White Hart Lane, where the new ground is being constructed, was also lined with emergency vehicles.

A crowd gathered at the scene and looked on nervously.

The stadium construction site is adjacent to the current stadium, and the new 61,100-seater ground is planned to be ready by 2018.

It is believed the man accessed the secure site by charging the gate.

The Metropolitan police said: “There are officers in attendance and they are attempting to negotiate with the man.”

The crane is one of seven towering over the site of the new £500 million stadium, each adorned with the cockerel from the club’s badge.

Construction firm Mace controls the building site.

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman told the Standard: “Mace are dealing with a situation with a local man who had accessed the building site.

“The individual is known to local police, who are on site to assist.”

Chloe Fletcher, a talent and music exec at MTV international, described the scene as ‘horrible’.

She said: “Police cars are everywhere.

"Loads of people are just standing around, waiting and looking up.”
