A pregnant woman had a "lucky escape" after a fire left her trapped inside a flat in north east London during the early hours of this morning.

Flames engulfed a hallway outside the front of the victim's home in Pembar Avenue, Walthamstow, the London Fire Brigade said.

But fire crews managed to rescue her from the first floor flat after the building became filled with smoke shortly after 4am.

Firefighters from Walthamstow and Leytonstone fire stations also led a man and a woman to safety following the blaze, which they had under control within 40 minutes.

The trio, who did not suffer serious injuries, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.

Fire chiefs have reissued an appeal to Londoners to ensure they have a smoke alarm fitted in their homes, after it was revealed the house did not have one.

Watch Manager Charlotte Fitzgerald said: “We worked quickly to rescue the three people.

"There were no smoke alarms in the property so the residents had a lucky escape.

"Working smoke alarms are essential because they provide vital early warnings and allow extra time to escape if there is a fire in your home."

The cause of this morning's fire is being investigated.
