Around 450,000 condoms are being handed out to Olympic athletes during this year's Rio games - three times the number distributed for London in 2012.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said the reason was partly due to 100,000 female condoms being made available for the first time.

Alongside 350,000 male condoms, there will also be a whopping 175,000 packets of lubricant dished out.

Athletes and staff will be able to pick up the contraceptives for free from a clinic or vending machines at the Olympic village.

The IOC said it hoped the condoms would encourage 10,500 people to have safe sex during the tournament.

London set a record in 2012 for the number of condoms distributed, with 150,000 - roughly 15 for every competitor.

Just 100,000 were given out in communist China during Beijing's 2008 Games.

It is not known if the big increase this year is partly due to an outbreak in Brazil of the Zika virus.
