London cinema workers are to stage a 24-hour strike in a long-running dispute over pay.

Union members at five Picturehouse sites will walk out on Saturday as part of a campaign to be paid the voluntary London Living Wage of £9.75 an hour - higher than the Government's £7.50 for workers over the age of 25.

The stoppage at cinemas in the capital will take the number of strike days to more than 40 in the last seven months.

The Bectu section of the Prospect union has accused owner Cineworld of refusing to negotiate.

Union members will walk out at 1pm on Saturday and the strike will run until 5am on Easter Sunday.

Staff from the East Dulwich, Crouch End and Hackney Picturehouses, Picturehouse Central in Piccadilly and The Ritzy in Brixton are involved in the industrial action.

It is the first time workers from the East Dulwich Picturehouse have joined strike action in the dispute.

Ben Lennon, from East Dulwich Picturehouse, said: “We at East Dulwich have seen the campaign growing and it’s become clear that we need to be a part of it. It isn't just about Picturehouse.

“It's about all workers, especially those below the national average pay. People should not be forced into work ill or face being unable to pay their rent.

“We should not live in fear of having our hours drastically reduced in quieter months.”

The Standard has approached Picturehouse for comment.
