Flood alerts have been issued for stretches of the Thames after high tides caused the river to swell.

The alerts, which are less immediate than flood warnings, were first issued on Sunday, and remain in place today.

Saturday's 'supermoon', so called when the moon is unusually close to Earth, could explain the high water levels, as the moon's gravitational pull can impact on tides.

Earlier this year a so-called 'supermoon' apparently swelled the river, flooding banks in areas including Greenwich, Putney and Chiswick.

The Environment Agency has listed locations potentially affected by flooding this week, which include Custom House, Narrow Street in Limehouse, Mayflower and Angel pubs in Rotherhithe, Royal Naval College riverfront, the Almshouse Slipway at Crane Street in Greenwich, Bankside by the Tate Modern, and Three Mill Island in Bow.

Locations further west which may also potentially be affected by flooding are Putney Embankment, Chiswick Mall and Strand on the Green, Thames Bank at Mortlake, Ranelagh Drive in Twickenham, Friars Lane and Water Lane in Richmond, Riverside and The Embankment at Twickenham, and the Towpath below Teddington Lock.

Further 'supermoons' are due to occur on September 28 and October 27 this year.
