A "show-off" 4x4 driver was left red-faced today when his brand new car became stuck in the mud on the banks of the Thames.

Firefighters had to come to the rescue after the oblivious motorist was caught out on the foreshore in Chiswick, west London, on Friday afternoon.

The London Fire Brigade used mud paths to reach the stranded man and a passenger, with the car being towed in later by a recovery vehicle.

Chiswick fire station manager Gareth Cook said: “It appears that the driver wanted to show off his new car but got into trouble when his four wheel drive got stuck in mud.

"We safely rescued the pair and the car was recovered by a road recovery service.

“The incident shows that it’s not just fires that we deal with and our advice to anyone deciding to go off road is to make sure they check their vehicle can deal with the terrain.”

Firefighters were called shortly before 2pm and left the scene about an hour later, LFB said.
