Silencing Big Ben's bongs 'may threaten John Bercow's love life'

Silencing Big Ben for restoration works may ring in big changes for the Commons Speaker's marital relations, according to reports.

John Bercow lives in a grace-and-favour flat right beside the clock tower - something his wife Sally Bercow has admitted to finding "incredibly sexy".

The 47-year-old said in an interview in 2011: "I never realised how sexy I would find living under Big Ben with the bells chiming."

Now friends have claimed they worry that four years without hourly bongs from the Great Bell could sap passion from the couple's love-life.

One MP is said to have joked to the Sunday Times: "I hope John doesn't live to regret his decision about silencing the bongs."

Big Ben will fall silent on Monday, with some "traditionalist" MPs vowing to stand in solemn vigil with their heads bowed as it chimes for the last time at noon.

Many have been critical of the decision and demanded a rethink after the decision was taken that the bongs would be too loud for construction workers renovating the historic building.

The Commons commission, which is chaired by Mr Bercow, last week said it would look again at the decision.
