Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan has been left battered and bruised after he was allegedly knocked off his bike in a hit-and-run crash in north London.

The broadcaster, 59, posted a picture of himself with large grazes to his left cheek and chin on Friday afternoon.

He said he was involved in a crash while he was cycling in Kentish Town on Thursday.

Mr Murnaghan, who presents the Sky News Tonight With Dermot Murnaghan programme, has not been on air for the last two days.

He tweeted: “Here's why I haven't been on air for 2 days. A hit and run in Kentish Town yesterday. Police were fantastic."

He told Sky News: "So last Thursday I woke at 6am, put on my hi-vis cycling jacket got on my bike to meet my mates for a few healthy miles before work.

"Twenty minutes later I was lying by the side of the road with a broken cycle helmet and a hobbled bike, still spinning, lights shining - and a variety of cuts, bruises and abrasions. But thankfully no broken bones.

"On an empty road in north London a guy in a car on a mobile phone pulled out from the side of the road without indicating. I swerved that. But a millisecond later he u-turned into me and wiped me out."

He said a Good Samaritan who saw the crash said the driver sped away. Mr Murnaghan said he did not get the details of the person who stopped to help but “thanked them from the bottom of his heart.”

The newsreader, who is an avid cyclist, appeared to make some light of his ordeal on social media.

After a follower replied to his Tweet on Friday with: "Perhaps someone doesn't like his show on @SkyNews??" he responded: "Haha. Plenty of suspects!"

And when another said: "Good job the bike is ok?" he replied: "Sign of a true cyclist - is the bike ok? It's all your fault."

Fellow Sky presenter Tom Macleod tweeted to say he would be filling Murnaghan's role on Sky News Tonight on Friday.

He said: "Swift recovery wishes to Dermot Murnaghan - rest up."
