'Iconic' Sloane Street to be transformed with £40 million revamp

Grand designs: how Sloane Street could look under the plans for wider pavements and planted gardens

Sloane Street is to undergo a £40 million revamp to help boost it as a luxury shopping destination.

Cadogan Estates today announced it would “transform the iconic street” connecting Knightsbridge and Sloane Square over three years, beginning in the autumn.

John McAslan + Partners, the architects behind the reinvention of King’s Cross Station in 2012, have drawn up plans to create wide pavements made from York stone and silver-grey granite along the half-mile route and install improved lighting and public seating areas.

Small public gardens will create an “elegant green boulevard” — with planting overseen by Chelsea Flower Show winner Andy Sturgeon.

The landscape designer said the plans would “draw out the historic gardens along the street” and help “take ‘retail therapy’ to another level”.

He said: “The planting incorporates new and innovative species [of plant] to London, in the spirit of Sir Hans Sloane, the renowned physician, collector and botanist from whom the street takes its name.”

The revamp — in partnership with Kensington & Chelsea council — will include additional pedestrian crossings and “designed-in” street security measures. During works, sections of the road will be closed at intervals, but through traffic will be maintained.

The plans by Cadogan Estates, owned by Earl Cadogan, will be the most significant improvements for Sloane Street since it was commissioned by the 1st Earl Cadogan in the 18th century, with architect Henry Holland creating its original “London Botanic Gardens”.

The company said the revamp will “strengthen Sloane Street’s position as a global destination for luxury retail”. Kensington & Chelsea council leader Elizabeth Campbell said: “This project will breathe life into our high street.”
