A Soho nightclub has closed down after its licence was revoked because its bouncers allegedly attacked a man with baseball bats.

Madame Jojo's was forced to close temporarily in October after the attack involving its staff and workers from neighbouring club Escape.

Its owners reportedly changed its manager and bouncers in an attempt to save the business.

But the club looks set to shut down permanently after Westminster Council revoked its licence at a meeting on Thursday evening.

A spokesman for the club, which has seen performances from the likes of Adele, The xx and The Klaxons, was not immediately available for comment.

In a statement, the organisers of one of its most popular nights, White Heat, described the decision to close Madame Jojo's as "gutting".

It said: "We know a lot of you have been waiting to hear about what's been going on with White Heat over the past few weeks. About a month ago our home of ten years, Madame Jojo's, was shut down due to a serious incident of disorder outside. On Thursday the council decided to revoke the venue's licence rendering us homeless and its staff, our friends, out of a job.

"We've been forced to cancel all of our foreseeable shows at the venue and it's probably going to be impossible to have one last hurrah at Jojo's for old times sake.

"For now we're going to weigh up our options and try to work out what we can salvage from this. We've put on a party every week for the past ten years so it's in our blood, don't expect to hear nothing.

"Thank you all for everything you've helped us create so far. Love from Matty, Marcus and Olly".

White Heat is now set to be moved to The Lexington in Kings Cross.

Tim Mitchell, the chairman of Westminster city council’s licensing committee, said "serious questions" had been raised over the management of both Madame Jojo's and Escape Bar, which also had its licence revoked.

He said: “On 24 October, an organised assault with injury took place - involving staff from Madame JoJo’s and Escape Bar - raising serious questions about their management.

“Our licensing sub-committee has to consider the safety of the public and after considering evidence from a number of interested parties, including the police, it was concluded that the licences for both bars should be revoked.

“The fact that these events are the subject of an on-going criminal investigation tells you how serious the assault was - and also means we are unable to say any more at the moment.”
