EastEnders actor Adam Woodyatt has revealed how his son was airlifted to hospital and had to be put into an induced coma after a horror car crash in London.

Mr Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale in the soap, said son Adam underwent five hours of surgery to "put him back together" and spent weeks in a wheelchair after the incident.

Opening up about the ordeal in an online fundraising page, Mr Woodyatt explained the 19-year-old had been crossing the road in London when he was struck by the vehicle on September 29.

He wrote: "Sam was crossing the road and got hit by a car.

"The London Air Ambulance responded, treated him at roadside, put him into an induced coma and took him to the Royal London Hospital.

"I'm not going to go into all the details, that's Sam's business but the operation to put him back together took five hours.

"Up until last Monday he was in a wheelchair, on Tuesday he started on crutches, yesterday, Friday 18th November, he was walking up a staircase unaided."

Just before the accident, the pair had decided to run the London Marathon as the tortoise and the hare in aid of the London Air Ambulance, for which Mr Woodyatt is an ambassador .

And the actor said his son's ordeal had made them even more determined.

He wrote: "His recovery has been amazing and we are going to continue with the original plan.

"In case you are wondering, I'm the tortoise, he's still going to be the hare."
