Southwark Cathedral has been closed “with immediate effect” to protect worshippers from Covid.

The decision — which goes beyond government guidance allowing them to remain open — follows a similar move by St Paul’s Cathedral over the weekend.

Mayor Sadiq Khan had urged places of worship to close last Friday.

Clerics including the Bishop of Southwark, Christopher Chessun, met on Monday and agreed to close.

Services will move online.

Andrew Nunn, the dean of Southwark, said: “We regret having to do this but believe we have a duty to help keep people as safe as possible.”
