Squirrel runs amok during London Assembly meeting on the environment 'representing the voice of mother nature'

A squirrel made a surprising appearance at the London Assembly today while members discussed environmental issues.

Assembly members were meeting to discuss the impacts of London Heathrow airport in the light of new revelations about climate change when they received the unexpected visitor.

A squirrel came into the chamber half a dozen times, running around the table at the centre of the room and drawing the attention of some visiting pupils.

Giles Broadbent, who works at the authority, captured the squirrel's visit at the environment committee.

He said: "It was a rare and delightful visitor - there were some school children that came in to watch some of the dealings in the chamber and they were obviously more distracted by him.

"He was quite a plucky little thing, as well - he came in and out maybe six or seven times and scurried around.

"It did seem particularly apt as we were talking about the impact of Heathrow so that was the best committee for it to choose, really."

"We were discussing Heathrow through that prism, and in that context whether our projects are wrong and need to be adapted.

Green Party member for Highbury, Caroline Russell, who attended the meeting said: "Bless him, he just wanted to make sure there was a voice representing the natural world at the meeting.

The squirrel was said to have left the chamber of its own accord and was seen scurrying around outside City Hall.
