The creator of Sweeney Todd Stephen Sondheim and Hollywood actor James Franco popped in to watch a performance of the show in London’s oldest pie and mash shop.

Mr Sondheim, who composed the 1979 musical, surprised the cast and audience by showing up to the final performance in Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop, Tooting, on Saturday.

The intimate production has received rave reviews, including a five star review in the Standard, since its opening night in London on October 21.

It was staged by Tooting Arts Club, a theatre company which does not have a permanent home and was funded with the help of donations on Kickstarter.

Spiderman actor James Franco also shocked theatre-goers by turning up to watch a performance last week.

The Golden Globe winner posted a photograph of the set on his Instagram account with the message: “Go see SWEENEY TODD in LONDON! One of the best shows I've ever seen. At HARRINGTON'S PIE SHOP in TOOTING! Go now.”

After the performance he posed for photographs with the cast.

The Victorian horror story tells the tale of a serial killer who murders his victims in a barber shop before putting the bodies in pies for Mrs Lovett to bake.
