Tate Modern giant slides to return.. but this time at South Bank's Hayward Gallery

An artist's impression of the slides at the Hayward Gallery

The artist Carsten Höller who transformed Tate Modern with giant slides is to recreate the experience on the South Bank.

A new exhibition of his work at the Hayward Gallery will conclude with visitors being confronted with several dramatic ways to exit including climbing through the glass pyramid rooflights and descending 15.5 metres in 39 metre long slides.

The new installation, Isomeric Slides (2015), will be built onto the gallery’s outside wall and return exhibition-goers to the entrance.

The 53-year-old Belgian said that as well as being a sculptural installation, they would be a device for “experiencing an emotional state that is a unique condition somewhere between delight and madness”.

Other highlights of the exhibition will include Flying Machines (2008/2015) installed on an outdoor terrace opposite Waterloo Bridge which will offer visitors the sensation of soaring over city traffic and The Pinocchio Effect (1994) which uses technology to offer the sensation of a growing nose.

And in keeping with the exhibition’s title, Decision, visitors will be confronted with choices from the start including which of two entrances offering different routes through the show to take and whether to eat one of more than 1 million pills dropped from a ceiling-mounted timepiece, Pill Clock (2011-2015).

There will also be robotic moving beds and flying mushrooms.

Ralph Rugoff, the Hayward Gallery director, said: “Carsten Holler is truly one of the world’s most thought-provoking and profoundly playful artists, with a sharp and mischievous intelligence bent on turning our ‘normal’ view of things upside-down.”

Carsten Holler: Decision will run from June 10 to September 6, admission £15. For more visit this link
