Tesco is to launch its first ever pub in central London as part of its celebrations to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

The supermarket will open pop-up The King in the Castle in Cowcross Street, Farringdon, from midday to 11pm next Thursday and Friday (May 4 and 5).

Running at the premises of popular city pub The Castle, it promises “an affordable option” for Londoners looking to kickstart their bank holiday celebrations early.

The building will be decked out in flags, bunting and floral displays, with a special coronation-themed menu featuring ‘Prince’s crust pie’ and ‘Camilla’s King prawn curry’.

Usual pub drinks will be available including beers on tap, wines, spirits, and cocktails including a trifle-inspired bellini.

All proceeds will go to the Tesco’s charity partner The Prince’s Trust, which was founded by the King in his former role as The Prince of Wales, and helps support young people across the UK to build their skills and find employment.

Research by Tesco suggests one in five Londoners cite “going to the pub” as their favourite way to come together with friends and family.

The supermarket also found adults in the UK spend an average of £92 over a bank holiday weekend, rising to £136 amongst 18 to 44-year-olds.

Tesco Chief Customer Officer Alessandra Bellini said: “As one of the most enduring parts of British culture, pubs have traditionally been an important part of local communities and so a pub felt like the perfect way to bring people together to mark this special occasion.

“What’s more, we’ll donate £250,000 from the proceeds of sales of our limited-edition Coronation range in-store, along with all proceeds from the pub to The Prince’s Trust so we can all enjoy food that both tastes good and does good.

“This is a wonderful way for us highlight the incredible work [The Prince’s Trust] do and help them to continue to support young people across the UK for many years to come.

“Whether you’re planning to celebrate the Coronation at home with your own party, or are joining us at our pub, we’ve made sure that everyone can enjoy a royally good weekend.”

Bookings can be made via OpenTable from Thursday, and walk-ins will also be welcome.
