Thousands of people are expected to attend a huge anti-Brexit march being planned in London as Theresa May prepares to trigger Article 50.

Organisers of the Unite for Europe event say almost 5,000 people are willing to march to the Houses of Parliament on March 25.

They insist that “Brexit can be stopped” and the march will help “embolden our elected representatives” so they can stand up to “incompetent leadership”.

It is being timed to coincide with the Government’s stated intention to trigger Article 50 by the end of March.

Organisers said: “The vast majority of our MPs support our membership of the European Union, but are being railroaded into a catastrophe by reckless and incompetent leadership.

“There is a long, unpredictable, road ahead that Parliament will have some (hopefully much!) control over.

"They need to know just how many votes there are in adopting a pro-EU position.

“With our vocal support, they can stop Brexit."

Organisers believe they can "change minds".

They added: "As the damage of an impending Brexit reveals itself over the coming months, we can help sway public opinion with our demonstration of support for the European Union and all its benefits.

“We can send a message of goodwill to our European friends and neighbours.”

The exact route of the march, which is being organised by several pro-EU groups, is to be confirmed, but is expected to start in Park Lane.

On Monday the Supreme Court ruled that the decision to trigger Article 50, which will start the two-year process of leaving the EU, must be approved by Parliament.

In September, thousands took to the capital's streets in an anti-Brexit march which called for the UK to stregthen ties with Europe.
